Study for Your Citizenship Test

Everything you need to prepare for the USCIS naturalization interview , for free. Browse the 128 civics questions, look up your state officials, and read our in-depth study guides.

The USCIS naturalization interview tests four things, all in one sitting with an immigration officer: civics knowledge (you'll be asked up to 20 questions from a pool of 128 and need to answer 12 correctly), English reading (read one sentence aloud correctly out of three attempts), English writing (write one sentence correctly from dictation out of three attempts), and an N-400 application review where the officer goes through your form and asks you to confirm or clarify your answers. The whole thing typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

Most applicants underestimate two things. First, that the civics test is oral, you have to produce the answers out loud, in English, on the first try. Recognizing an answer on a flashcard is different from saying it under pressure. Second, that the N-400 review is where the most denials actually happen, not the civics test. The officer scrutinizes travel history, addresses, employment, and any record of arrests. Inconsistencies between your N-400 and what you say at the interview can delay or deny your case.

The three sections below cover what you need to study. Start with the 128 civics questions if your interview is more than two weeks away. If you're less than a week out, focus on the state officials section and a full mock interview. Reading the study guides in parallel will tell you what to expect on the day itself, how to manage interview anxiety, and how to avoid the most common denial reasons.

One thing worth knowing up front: if you fail any part of the interview on your first attempt, USCIS gives you a second chance within 60 to 90 days, on the parts you missed. So a bad day on the civics test doesn't sink your case, but you can't get a third try, which is why preparation matters. Most applicants who study consistently for four weeks pass on their first attempt, including those who arrive with limited English and those above the 65/20 senior exemption threshold. The free resources here are enough to get most people there.
