The USCIS interviewer asks this question to see if you know how the American economy operates. The answer is that the United States has a capitalist economy, also called a market economy. You can use either term during your interview.

In a market economy, private individuals and businesses make most economic decisions. People are free to start businesses, choose their jobs, and decide what to buy and sell. Prices are generally determined by supply and demand rather than by the government. The government does play a role, it enforces laws, collects taxes, and provides public services, but it does not control the economy the way a government does in a command economy.

This system is built on the idea of economic freedom. If you have a good idea for a product or service, you can start a company and compete in the marketplace. Consumers choose which products to buy, and businesses that serve their customers well tend to succeed. This freedom of economic choice is closely connected to the political freedoms protected by the Constitution. Many immigrants come to the United States specifically because of the economic opportunities this system creates.
